Digital transformation (DX) has become of key importance for organizations seeking to stay competitive. However, the path to digital success has many challenges. According to a recent CIO Survey by Gartner, only 48% of digital initiatives across the average enterprise meet or exceed their business targets. Despite large investments, many businesses still struggle to reach the full potential of their digital transformation efforts. In 2026, 94% of CIOs expect major changes to their plans and outcomes within the next 24 months and more than 80% of CIOs plan to invest in GenAI, cybersecurity, Business Intelligence, data analytics, and integration technologies; the need for effective strategies becomes even more critical.
At NXG Consulting, we understand the complexities of digital transformation. In this article, we share valuable insights from key industry reports and an NXG digital transformation case study that highlights the importance of DX.
Client 1 – A Fortune 500 Financial Services Company
Developing a proactive push notification service for a large US financial institution
Founded over 40 years ago, our client is a well-known financial institution that developed their in-house technology many years ago, before the cloud era. Seeking to drive trade volume on their platform, they wanted to develop a system that would alert their mobile users when a stock that the user owned or watched changed a certain percentage in one trading day. With increased trading volume, the platform would see increased revenue from commissions.
The challenge: Creating a scalable system that handles important edge cases
The system not only had to be able to scale to handle volatile trading days, it also had to offer strong guarantees to protect the customer experience: avoid duplicate message delivery and handle outages gracefully.
NXG’s approach and implementation
NXG solved the first challenge by using exactly-once processing with AWS Simple Queue Service. In the event of an outage, to enable the system to pick up where it left off, we utilized the Java Virtual Machine shutdown hook to save the current state of the system. We opted for standard technologies having a mature ecosystem and large developer pool: Java, Oracle and Amazon Simple Storage Service.
We used a Microservices design that could scale different parts of the system according to the load. To ensure the system’s intended operation, we used code quality checks, enforced coding guidelines and load-tested the system before delivery.
To protect against unforeseen issues, we also implemented a safeguard that could quickly halt the system if an issue occurred during production.
The result was a proactive push notification system that drove a large increase in trading volume on the client’s platform. Thanks to NXG’s focus on defensive programming and thorough testing at multiple stages in the development cycle, the system was free from vulnerabilities and the client saw improved revenue with minimal running cost.
Value brought by NXG
- Launched a performant and secure platform serving over 1.2mm monthly active users
- Mitigated security risks with load testing and automated enforced code quality checks
- Increased revenue from commissions by 23%
Client 2 – An Aviation Tech Startup
Building out a resilient back-end system for an aviation tech startup
Our client wanted to improve their clients’ booking experience for private flights on their existing platform. The platform needed to provide granular access control for various Member Services employees as well as correctly keep track of catering orders for many flights.
The challenge: Designing a data system that accurately reflects catering orders
Designing the catering database schema and backend services required thoughtfulness and attention to detail. The system not only had to allow for orders to be placed, updated and cancelled only for valid flights, it also had to manage them over multiple flight legs for multi-leg journeys.
NXG’s approach and implementation
NXG worked in close collaboration with both technical and non-technical stakeholders to distill requirements. We created an auth system that could issue and revoke JWT tokens in real-time, enabling granular and immediate authentication/authorization of system endpoints. We used Spring Authorization, a tried and true framework, to secure API endpoints. During testing we used RestAssured library to test the authorization was working correctly. For the catering layer, we modeled the database schema to be Third Normal Form compliant, ensuring efficient and always-consistent storing of catering orders.
We used a Microservices design that could scale different parts of the system according to the load. To ensure the system’s intended operation, we used code quality checks, enforced coding guidelines and load-tested the system before delivery.
The result was a modern, performant microservices backend that enabled Member Services to effectively support customers while ensuring tight access controls.
Value brought by NXG
- Designed and built a secure system facilitating the Customer Experience (CX) of five-figure USD transactions
- Carefully designed, implemented and tested the catering layer, both backend and database, ensuring 100% correct functionality in the customer lifecycle
- Decreased the loading time of available flights on Desktop and Mobile by ~12% improving the hot path performance by adding indexes to heavy database queries
